Locals say the monkeys also attack children, and the attacks are daily.

The wife of a leader of a major political party in India died while trying to escape an attack by monkeys. Sushma Devi, 50, was taken to hospital but unfortunately died of her injuries.

She is the wife of Anil Kumar Chauhan, Bharatiya Janata party leader. The incident happened on September 9, when she was attacked by aggressive monkeys on the terrace of her home in the city of Kairan.

To avoid the attack, she jumped from the balcony.

Wild monkeys are wreaking havoc in the Shamli region of Uttar Pradesh in northern India, where local authorities are taking tough action. Locals say the monkeys also attack children, and the attacks are daily. Sushma was also a politician and a member of the district council.

In November 2019, two monkey attacks claimed the lives of a 12-day-old baby and a 58-year-old woman in the town of Agra.

In the first attack, they broke into the baby’s mother’s home and snatched him from her arms while she was breastfeeding him, then beat him to death.

In the second attack, the 58-year-old woman was bitten by monkeys near her home on the outskirts of the city and died of blood loss.

Last year, the British tabloid Daily Mail reported that a mother and her four children were crushed under the weight of a fallen wall pushed by monkeys in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

According to the publication, the five victims were killed by pieces of masonry that fell on them as a result of “strong shaking” on the wall by monkeys.

During the incident, the victims slept outside their house because the ceiling fan was damaged and they wanted to cool off from the excessive heat. Two of the family’s children survived.

According to the Daily Mail, a local magistrate met with them. He assured that they would receive the best possible treatment.

“This is a tragic accident. The mother and her four children died on the spot as soon as the wall fell on them,” he said.

Authorities in Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, have offered the family 400,000 rupees (£ 4,200) in compensation.

The incident is the latest in a series of monkey-related tragedies in the country, which is home to about 50 million primates.

Last August, a 50-year-old man died in Samble after falling from a balcony in his home, attacked by an “army of monkeys”, writes the Daily Mail.

It was then claimed that this was the sixth death related to a monkey in Samhal in 2019 alone.

In June 2019, a one-and-a-half-month-old baby was killed by a monkey who jumped into his crib to steal his milk bottle.

It is known that red-eyed macaques are constantly wreaking havoc in Delhi, stealing food and phones and even entering people’s homes.

A group of monkeys attacked a medical officer in Merut who took blood samples from patients with coronavirus. People living near the medical college feared further spread of the virus if the monkeys carried the samples to residential areas. However, so far there is no evidence that monkeys can be infected with the coronavirus.

Environmentalists, for their part, say the destruction of monkeys’ natural habitats is the main reason animals move to urban areas in search of food.
