A married Indonesian woman was sentenced to be beaten with a stick because she cheated on her husband. She had to endure 100 blows, while her lover was sentenced to only 15. The case is from the conservative Islamic province of Aceh. The flogging was stopped for a short time because the woman could not bear the pain, writes Daily Mail.

Aceh is a region in western Indonesia where only Sharia law applies. Ivan Alavi, part of the investigating authorities, says that the sentence was reduced after the accused revealed her partner in the infidelity.

The judges found it difficult to get a confession from the man, who denied it to the last. However, authorities found him guilty of “attracting a woman who is not his wife” after the lovers were caught “on the move” in a palm oil plantation.

His sentence was 30 strokes, which were later reduced to 15. Thus, he escaped relatively easily, compared to his fellow citizen, who was sentenced to 75 months in prison and 100 lashes after a relationship with a young girl.

The execution of the sentence was in front of the eyes of the locals, who recorded the beating with their phones. This is not a precedent, as before the pandemic such events attracted thousands of spectacular locals.

Aceh is the only region in Indonesia where Muslims are in the majority and where Islamic law is used. It allows whipping to be handed down for charges of gambling, drunkenness, homosexual sex and adultery.

In the past, an interesting law was formed on the territory of the state, which is a mixture of local norms and Islamic traditions. Aceh was subsequently given the privilege of continuing to use it to overcome separatist sentiment in the region.

Over the years, the central government has delegated more rights to local administrators in order to ensure faster development.

This leads to a situation in which there are religious police who persecute and severely punish homosexuality, women who do not wear the hijab, and people who drink and gamble.

As early as 2018, Aceh announced that the public lynching, which will now take place behind the walls of prisons, will be stopped, but alas, this has not become a reality. Even the number of such sentences is on the rise, which worries human rights defenders.
