WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court is sending a message to states that want to continue to carry out the death penalty: Inmates must be allowed to have a spiritual adviser by their side as they are executed.
The high court Thursday declined to let Alabama proceed with the lethal injection of Willie B. Smith III. Smith had objected to Alabama’s policy that his pastor would have had to observe his execution from an adjacent room rather than the death chamber itself.
The order from the high court follows two years in which inmates saw rare success in bringing challenges based on the issue of chaplains in the death chamber. This time, liberal and conservative members of the court found common ground on the issue of religious freedom and how the death penalty is carried out.
Justice Brett Kavanaugh, one of three justices who said they would have let Smith’s execution go forward, said Alabama’s policy applies equally to all inmates and serves a state interest in ensuring safety and security. But he said it was apparent that his colleagues who disagreed were providing a path for states to follow.
The European Union and US both said they looking to resolve a conflict over aircraft manufacturing that has lasted nearly two decades, according to reports.

Both have since moved to roll back the tax subsidies at the center of the dispute, according to CNBC.
President Joe Biden has said he wants to restore good ties with traditional US allies, including countries in the EU, after they were strained by the Trump administration’s “America First” approach to trade and foreign policy.
French President Emmanuel Macron and envoys from the UK and EU have been pushing Biden for resolution on the issue.
If it is not resolved, EU Ambassador Stavros Lambrinidis has said China – which provides 100% subsidies to its aircraft manufacturers – could soon flood the global market in that sector, Foreign Policy reported.
Talks are on hold until Biden’s nominee for top trade negotiator, Katherine Tai, is confirmed in her job by the US Senate. Reuters reported the process “could take several more weeks” and noted that a confirmation hearing has not been scheduled yet.

The universal worldview of Oneness: The divine voice spoke to me: “I have shown you that I am everywhere, in all men and in all things, for those striving for the country and for those opposing them. iv) Which enables us not only to understand and believe this truth but to realize it with every part of our being
v) Which shows the world what the world is, that it is the Lila (play) of Vasudeva
vi) Which shows how we can best play our part in this Lila, its subtlest laws and its noblest rules
vii) Which does not separate life in any smallest detail from religion, which knows what immortality is and has utterly removed from us the reality of death”.
2.2 Need for Spiritual Leaders: He ends, “This is the word that has been put into my mouth to speak to you today. I spoke once before when I said that this freedom movement is not political; nationalism is not politics but a religion, a creed, a faith. Today I say nationalism is Sanatana dharma. The Hindu nation was born with Sanatana dharma; with it, it moves and with it, it grows. When Sanatana dharma declines, then the nation declines. This is the message I have to speak to you.”
3. Modern Western ideas we’re aping – Myth or Reality? Good or bad? Western worldview, based on their own materialistic culture and history, hold that their ideological, belief-based religion, alone is true; but not fit to be a part of schooling! Not universal, and not scientific enough, perhaps! They hold that rulers are oppressive, enslave people, don’t allow freedom to live as they wish, etc. So, they’ve fought for freedom believing that people know best (do they?) and must be free to choose leaders of their choice. Myth or reality?
4. Bharat’s ancient ideal had been the rule of raja-rishis. Freedom is mankind’s goal earned thru’ obedience and discipline; it is not the beginning! Our rulers and teachers were spiritually mature, guided by seers with long-term vision. They had the moral authority and wisdom to dispense justice fairly and create systems to educate and guide society to be good. Ultimately, only a few people can be good and be good rulers. And it is easier to identify and educate the few!
If all men are equal, and schooling is focused on knowledge of this and that, who is now responsible to make the good and who is to guide whom, and why? Modern ideas have failed to create good people and place them in positions of responsibility. Can politics of democracy ever succeed? Why not learn from our culture too!
5. Now what? Hopefully, modern schooling will provide an academic milieu where students and faculty can openly discuss and explore the universal ideals of religions, bereft of ideological beliefs and get established in the habit of daily self-development practices and become Karma-yogis, inspired to work for good of society and grow more and more in feelings of love, care, concern for each other.

Uganda’s handling of elections last month is back to haunt them as the European Union mulls sanctions.
On Thursday, the EU parliament passed a resolution saying the election was not democratic, police and soldiers used excessive force, and detainees should be released.
To their end, Uganda accused the EU of “unbalanced” and “unobjective” resolution.
Uganda accused the European Union of meddling on Friday after the bloc’s parliament recommended sanctions over a crackdown and arrests of opponents around President Yoweri Museveni’s disputed re-election last month.
In power since 1986, Museveni was declared winner of the presidential poll with 59% of votes, but his main rival – pop star and lawmaker Bobi Wine – rejected the ballot as fraudulent.
On Thursday, the EU parliament passed a resolution saying the election was not democratic, police and soldiers used excessive force, and detainees should be released.
“Asking Uganda to release suspects already before the courts of law is tantamount to undue interference with a legitimate judicial process,” government spokesman Ofwono Opondo told Reuters in response.
“We consider its resolution against Uganda as unbalanced and unobjective, the motive of which we are yet to establish.”
Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, has challenged the results at the Supreme Court. During the campaign, security forces dispersed his rallies with teargas, bullets and beatings.
The government cited violations of anti-coronavirus measures as justification and accused Wine’s camp of destabilisation. At least 54 people were killed in November and some 600 detained.
“The election process was not democratic and transparent,” the EU resolution said. It condemned the security forces for brutality and interference in politics and chided the government for using Covid-19 as an excuse for repression.
“Sanctions against individuals and organisations responsible for human rights violations in Uganda must be adopted,” the lawmakers said in a recommendation to the 27-nation bloc’s executive.
Museveni, 76, has long been a Western ally, receiving copious aid flows while deploying his military to trouble spots like South Sudan and Somalia. His longevity in power and treatment of opponents have, however, caused increasing anger abroad.
The EU lawmakers’ call followed a similar plea from two US congressmen who asked Washington to impose sanctions on seven Ugandan security officials for alleged rights violations.
The European Union on Saturday called on China to reverse its ban on the BBC World News television channel imposed in apparent retaliation for Britain’s pulling of the licence of state-owned Chinese broadcaster CGTN.
The EU said in a statement that Beijing’s move further restricted freedom of expression and access to information inside its borders,” and violated both the Chinese constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The statement also said that Hong Kong’s announcement that its public broadcaster would also stop carrying BBC broadcasts added to the erosion of the rights and freedoms that is ongoing” in the semi-autonomous Chinese territory since the imposition last year of a sweeping new national security law.
The EU remains strongly committed to safeguarding media freedom and pluralism, as well as protecting the right to freedom of expression online and offline, including freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information without interference of any kind,” the statement said.
While Britain is no longer in the EU, it remains a member of the Council of Europe, which oversees a 1989 agreement linking broadcasting licenses. Britain, the U.S. and foreign correspondents based in China have also expressed dismay over the BBC ban.
China’s move Thursday was largely symbolic, because BBC World was shown only on cable TV systems in hotels and apartment compounds for foreigners and some other businesses. However, it comes against the backdrop of growing conflict between Beijing and Western governments over a slew of issues ranging from human rights to trade and the COVID-19 pandemic in which Chinese criticisms over foreign media coverage have played a prominent role.
China’s National Radio and Television Administration said BBC World News coverage of the country violated requirements that news reporting be true and impartial, reflecting complaints over BBC reports about the government’s initial response to the virus outbreak in China. Other complaints were over allegations of forced labor and sexual abuse in the northwestern Chinese region of Xinjiang, home to Uighurs and other predominantly Muslim ethnic groups. The EU statement specifically linked the ban to BBC reporting on those topics.
It wasn’t clear whether BBC reporters in China would be affected. Last year, Beijing expelled foreign reporters for The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times amid disputes with the Trump administration and complaints over media criticism of the ruling Communist Party.
Britain’s communications watchdog, Ofcom, revoked the license for CGTN, China’s English-language satellite news channel, on Feb. 4, citing links to the Communist Party, among other reasons.
A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Ofcom acted on political grounds based on ideological bias.
Losing its British license was a major blow for CGTN, which is part of a global effort by the party to promote its views and challenge Western media narratives about China, into which it has poured enormous resources. CGTN has a European operations hub in London.

On Thursday February 11 2021, at around 2 p.m. when the clinic staff was on break for lunch and afternoon prayers, someone rang the clinic doorbell and Abdul Qadir opened the door to answer the bell. President of the European Council Charles Michel has reaffirmed European Union’s continued support to Bangladesh for a lasting and peaceful solution to the Rohingya crisis.
He said this when Ambassador Mahbub Hassan Saleh, the newly-appointed Head of Mission of Bangladesh to the EU, met him to present his Letters of Credence in Brussels on Thursday.
Ambassador Saleh stressed the need for Myanmar authorities taking credible measures to generate confidence among the forcibly-displaced Rohingyas, temporarily sheltered in Bangladesh, for their safe, dignified and sustainable return to the Rakhine State.
President Michel recalled his previous meetings with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, including the last one held in Madrid in December 2019.
Ambassador Saleh also conveyed the greetings of the president and the prime minister of Bangladesh to the president of the European Council.
The European Council president acknowledged Bangladesh’s preoccupation with climate change, and noted the current presidency of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF).
Saleh suggested establishing a dedicated bilateral platform between Bangladesh and the EU for exchanging views and working more closely to address the challenges of climate change.
He also suggested holding a CVF-EU leaders’ meeting, during the lead-up to UNFCCC COP-26 in the UK later this year.
Michel responded positively to these suggestions.
The Bangladesh ambassador also underscored the need for expanding the scope of Bangladesh-European Union partnership.
He also conveyed Bangladesh prime minister’s invitation to the European Council president to visit the country at his earliest convenience.
The meeting took place following the existing health regulations in Belgium.
The ambassador was accompanied by Md Safiul Azam, counsellor (commerce) and Kaniz Fatema, first secretary (political) of the mission.
