The company was again criticized for the selection on the list
Facebook has a “blacklist” of more than 4,000 people and organizations that the company has identified as dangerous. This was announced by the online publication The Intercept, publishing the list itself, which is available from sources in the Internet giant.
The list includes the names of military groups, people and organizations suspected of terrorism, racists and more. However, the names on the list caused another scandal around Facebook.
Some of the experts The Intercept spoke with accused Facebook of mis-building the list and imposing stricter restrictions and rules on minority groups. One reason is that more than half of those accused of terrorism on Facebook’s list are from the Middle East, South Asia and Muslims.
The company was also accused of showing some priority over far-right organizations and opinions. The American organization ADL told the Daily Dot that the list “shows that Facebook not only ignores, but algorithmically helps extremist groups, white supremacy and related content.” Other presenters and analysts have also criticized the company for showing that Facebook’s tendency to impose different standards on different races and regions.
The internet giant has denied the allegations. A Facebook spokesman said the list was based on American public opinion and official definitions of the people and organizations in question.
The company also claims that it has even stricter standards than those of governments with regard to white supremacy groups, hatred and terrorist organizations. The official US definitions were used as the basis for the list, and more names were added.
There are also rules for the list. It is divided into groups, and for some of them there is zero tolerance and any publications praising them and them are prohibited. For others, praise for non-violent actions is allowed. However, the company says it does not apply priorities to certain groups, but has an agnostic approach to all criteria.
