Two doctors will have to confirm whether the person is only able to decide by taking this step
The Austrian federal government has introduced end of last year a bill to legalize the assisted suicide of seriously ill adults, the federal chancellery said in a statement, quoted by Reuters.
The new bill sets out the conditions under which assisted suicide will be possible in the future, following a ruling by the Austrian Constitutional Court last December that banning assisted suicide is unconstitutional because it violates citizens’ right to decide for themselves.
“Severely ill people should have the right to assisted suicide,” the federal chancellery said in a statement.
The new bill allows chronically and terminally ill adult citizens to decide on assisted suicide.
Those taking this step will need to consult with two doctors to confirm that the person is only capable of making decisions for themselves.
