The Mayor of Madrid José Luis Martínez-Almeida has assured that the City Council intends to “turn Madrid into the largest digital hub in southern Europe” that brings together innovation, talent and knowledge in order to continue progressing in the “right direction“. This is what he said during the inauguration of Telefónica’s 5G space, the first initiative of the great Global Innovation and Talent Hub that the company will develop in Madrid.

During the visit to this centre, in which he was accompanied by the councillor for the Fuencarral-El Pardo district, Javier Ramírez, the chairman of Telefónica, José María Álvarez-Pallete, and the chairman of Telefónica España, Emilio Gayo, the mayor stressed that the public sector must know how to keep up with the efforts being made by companies such as Telefónica. In this regard, he conveyed Madrid City Council’s commitment to the process of digital transformation to improve society and “which will give us access to better knowledge and opportunities“.

The mayor stressed that in 2021 Madrid was the city in Europe with the greatest growth in the number of data processing centres, something “essential to be able to take advantage of all the opportunities that technology gives us” and he expressed his pride at the fact that the United Nations “has declared us the first city in the world in digital public services, which encourages us to continue working hard and to provide the citizens of Madrid and companies with the best opportunities”.

Almeida explained that this 5G Madrid centre “brings together the determining factors of what is going to be the best recovery from the pandemic to tackle the economic and social situation and generate a better future for society as a whole”.
