The US company Tesla must pay more than $ 130 million to a black former employee, a federal jury ruled on Monday, concluding that the man was the subject of a racially hostile work environment, the Wall Street Journal reported, quoted by Reuters.
The jury believes that the company did not take reasonable steps to prevent racial harassment against Owen Diaz, who worked as an electric truck operator at the Tesla plant in Fremont, California, in 2015-2016.
In a message to its employees, which the company posted on its website, the electric car manufacturer said the process was due to racist insults heard in the factory and racist graffiti in the bathrooms.
The company also said that all three times Diaz complained of harassment, measures were taken by staffing agencies.
Diaz will receive $ 6.9 million in damages and $ 130 million in penal damages, the Wall Street Journal reported.
