Five people were detained
Greek police used tear gas in central Athens against a group of anarchists who attacked police, Kathimerini reported. The clash came after a procession of anarchists protested against the authorities’ demands to take DNA samples from previously detained representatives of anarchist groups, ERT-1 TV reported.
After the march, which involved about 150 people, a group of protesters attacked police with fire extinguishers. Police responded with tear gas. Five people were detained and one police officer was injured.
Authorities are demanding that DNA samples be taken from 14 suspects to determine their involvement in actions to occupy universities and other buildings. The court order is related to the ongoing investigation into the occupation of the office of the rector of the National Technical University in Athens last November. Following this incident, new clashes broke out this afternoon between police and anarchists in the area of the Exarchate neighborhood. Groups of masked youths barricaded streets in central Athens with garbage cans and provoked police, Kathimerini reported.
