A recent study has shown that it is classic literature, not motivational psychology books, that can improve brain efficiency and quality of life.
Scientists advise people suffering from depression, chronic diseases and even dementia to abandon their self-help series in favor of the works of Charles Dickens, Leo Tolstoy or Jane Austen.
Professor Philip Davis of the University of Liverpool notes that reading classics frees up emotions and imagination and allows people to feel “more alive” and relieve symptoms of the disease.
At the same time, motivational and similar books do not give such an effect, and the process of reading them does not distract the brain from sad thoughts.
– Reading fiction involves more complex processes, and the brain begins to work. A person is involved in what is happening, his emotions are involved, – explained Davis, reports The Daily Mail.
