The founder of the Peruvian left-wing radical terrorist organization “Sendero Luminoso” (Shining Path) Abimael Guzman died on Saturday in prison at the age of 86. This was announced by the press service of the country’s penal system.

“On Saturday, September 11, at approximately 6:40 a.m., in a maximum security prison located at the Calao Naval Base, prisoner “Sendero Luminoso” died of health problems,” the statement said.

Guzman was arrested in September 1992 and sentenced to life in prison.

Since 1980, more than 60,000 people have died as a result of Sendero Luminoso’s terrorist activities in Peru. The material damage to the country is estimated at about $ 25 billion.

After Guzman’s arrest, the group began to lose influence, but in recent years small groups of extremists have continued to attack the Peruvian military and law enforcement.
