The process has already begun with paintings by Alexander Sokurov.
The immediate plans are to restore the tape “Taurus” by Alexander Sokurov. The TASS agency was told in the studio that the director’s personal participation is expected. The “Golden Collection” of “Lenfilm” has one and a half thousand paintings.
Among the first, the drama “Moloch” by Alexander Sokurov has already been restored. In early December, an updated version of the film was shown at the Turin International Film Festival. The second film in this series, Taurus, will be restored next. The work is carried out with the participation of the director himself.
The Lenfilm Film Studio has decided to restore all the films from its Golden Collection.
“This is more than one and a half thousand paintings. Now the studio’s website and its social networks are actively voting: we called on viewers and film critics to share their views on the order of the restoration of films, ”Irina Pavlova, head of the Lenfilm editing and toning complex, told TASS.
The films in question are stored in the Gosfilmofond in film format. First, they need to be digitized, then each frame needs to be processed. The studio staff call this process “cinema archeology”. For example, when they were restoring Gennady Shpalikov’s Long Happy Life, they had to do a lot of analyzing the reviews of critics and art historians in order to understand what the director had in mind. In this case, the creator of the picture has long been dead, as well as eyewitnesses to his work, but his ideas regarding color and sound must be preserved, the studio notes.
