An awareness campaign that is part of the celebration of the INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST SEXUAL EXPLOITATION AND TRAFFICKING (September 23).

This initiative represents a firm position of the City Council of Jerez in favor of the protection of the thousands of women and girls who are abused by criminal networks of sexual exploitation.
The #DESACTIVALATRATA project is an initiative of Diaconia Spain that aims to mobilize society to end human trafficking.

The institutional presentation of the campaign took place on September 22, in the Plaza del Arenal in Jerez.

From September 22nd, Jerez de la Frontera joins the fight against human trafficking. To do this it will have an awareness campaign arranged in banners, located on lampposts in the city (Calle Larga and Plaza del Arenal). The activity, which is promoted by the organization Diaconia Spain, has the support and collaboration of the City of Jerez and the Delegation of Equality and Diversity. The visibility action, about this social problem, will remain exposed outdoors until October 20, 2021.

This activity is part of the #DESACTIVALATRATA project, an initiative launched in 2020 by Diaconia Spain, and which is currently funded by the European Union’s Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (FAMI), the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration and the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030.

YOUR CONSUMPTION FEEDS SEXUAL EXPLOITATION” has been the slogan selected to influence reflection on sexual exploitation caused by the consumption of sexual and pornographic content through digital platforms. For Eva Márquez García, Coordinator of the Women and Anti-Trafficking Area of Diaconia Spain, this opportunity represents “a space of visibility for the prevention of human trafficking, known as the slavery of the XXI Century, and which in Spain has sexual exploitation as its main purpose, although not only. Especially since the pandemic, new technologies have become a breeding ground for thousands of women and girls to be captured and sexually exploited in prostitution or pornography. From Diaconia, we want to raise awareness about the consumption of this type of content, most of which is generated under threats, extortion or deception,” said its coordinator.

As part of the awareness-raising activity, a presentation of the campaign was held on September 22 in the Plaza del Arenal in commemoration of the INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST SEXUAL EXPLOITATION AND TRAFFICKING. The launch was attended by the delegate of Equality and Diversity, Ana Hérica Ramos and the head of the Unit against Gender Violence of the Spain Government Subdelegation, Manuel Barranco.

The #DESACTIVALATRATA project also has the general objective of raising awareness about human trafficking, spreading a social awareness that opposes this crime in all its forms, based on the principles of equality, respect for diversity and the fight for human rights. With this objective in mind, the ongoing campaign also has a web page (www.desactivalatrata.es) which includes a TEST on knowledge about the problem of human trafficking. Through this reflection exercise, the aim is that society in general and young people in particular, can learn about the effect of the consumption of socially exploitative content on the Internet. An opportunity to learn about how this phenomenon affects millions of women and girls in the world, because of the vulnerability to which they are exposed and the pressure exerted by the various criminal networks of sexual exploitation, worldwide.

The delegate Ana Hérica Ramos has pointed out that “from the City Council of Jerez we have been working for some time with different entities and associations that are involved in one way or another in the prevention and care for victims of trafficking, as is the case of Diaconia Spain. This campaign is fully connected with the objectives of the Delegation of Equality and Diversity, in this case in the field of awareness against all forms of physical, sexual and symbolic violence against women and girls“.

For his part, Manuel Barranco, from the Unit against Gender Violence of the Subdelegation of the Spain Government, stressed the need to focus on the victims, and to make visible this inter-institutional coordination in favor of them.

90% of the victims of sexual exploitation are women and girls

International Labor Organization (ILO)

According to recent data, 90% of the victims of sexual exploitation are women and girls, according to the International Labor Organization (ILO). But only one in twenty (1/20) of trafficking victims are ever identified, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The prostitution business is undoubtedly huge, it is estimated that it mobilizes around 10 million euros a day, only in Spain according to data from INE (2014). Spain is pointed out, in different United Nations reports, as the European country where more prostitution is consumed. The demand for paid sex places Spain as the third country worldwide, in this shameful ranking.

The pioneering project, #DESACTIVALATRATA, of Diaconia Spain ̶ an entity with more than twenty years of experience in social action in different parts of Spain ̶ has positioned itself as a space for reflection and learning through the different training and awareness activities that it develops annually in different cities. To reinforce its work and increase awareness of this serious social reality, a training activity is planned in the city of Jerez de la Frontera.

Training seminar in Cadiz

Under the title: “Professional and Coordination Meeting on Anti-Trafficking in the Province of Cadiz“, a free training activity will be held, aimed at all persons and professionals who want to know in depth the different mechanisms in the fight against human trafficking and the defense of human rights. The registered participants will attend a face-to-face training activity, which will be guided by expert professionals from Diaconia Spain. The activity will take place on October 13 in the city of Cadiz, from 9:00 am to 6:30 pm. In classroom format, and maintaining the measures of capacity and security, the activity will take place in the Assembly Hall of the Zona Franca (Heracles Building). Francia Street, 11011 Cadiz.
