[Press Release] Council: Called to courageous witness and sharing hope

The Council expressed deep grief over the continuing suffering caused by the war against Ukraine, calling for Russia to withdraw from Ukrainian territories, as well as independent investigation and prosecution of international law violations and crimes. Its ‘Statement on the War Against Ukraine,” urged governments and the international community to “intensify diplomatic efforts toward ending the war,” uphold international humanitarian and human rights law “without exception,” and strengthen assistance and protection for the affected populations. Calling for “steadfast solidarity with the people affected” the Council noted that “silence and indifference in the face of suffering undermine our shared humanity.” [Read the full statement here]

Through its ‘Statement on the Reforms of the United Nations (UN) Security Council,’ the LWF governing body reaffirmed support for a more representative, inclusive, transparent, effective and accountable global governance system. It called on governments and the international community to renew their commitment to strengthening the UN, engage constructively “in good faith” with its Security Council reform negotiations and the wider reform agenda, while prioritizing diplomacy and dialogue and addressing long-standing structural injustices. In the ‘Call for Justice, Peace, Reconciliation, and Human Dignity in the Middle East,’ the Council expressed profound concern over escalating violence across the region and lamented the devastating humanitarian consequences. It called for a lasting ceasefire between the United States of America, Israel and Iran, followed by immediate peace negotiations. It is essential to renew concerted international efforts toward dialogue, diplomacy, and peaceful ways of resolving the crisis and “advancing just and lasting peace rooted in human rights and dignity for all,” the Council noted.
