The thefts are the latest in a string of heists at the Louvre and other French museums in recent months that have raised concerns about lax security at cultural institutions
A silverware keeper at the Elysee Palace in the French capital has been arrested for stealing silverware and porcelain, the Guardian reported end of December last year.
Investigators arrested the man and two alleged accomplices last week. They are accused of stealing items from the French president’s official residence in Paris and attempting to sell them on online auction platforms such as Vinted.
The Elysee Palace’s master of ceremonies reported the missing items, some of which are considered national heritage sites. Their total value is estimated at up to €40,000.
The majority of the items come from the Sèvres Manufactory in Paris, a renowned porcelain factory owned by the French state since 1759.
The investigation was launched after factory employees recognized some of the missing items on online sales platforms.
The alleged thefts are an unpleasant continuation of a series of robberies at the Louvre and other French museums in recent months that have raised concerns about lax security at the country’s cultural institutions.
