From Friday through early Monday morning, Ukrainian officials reported that more than a dozen civilians lost their lives, with upwards of 70 others injured, including two children. Disruptions to essential services were noted in over 270 towns and villages. These assaults occur amidst severe winter conditions in Ukraine, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis, as earlier attacks also caused service interruptions and multiple fatalities.
The region of Odesa has been particularly affected, experiencing near-daily assaults, as noted by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). An overnight strike on Friday targeting port facilities resulted in the deaths of eight civilians and injuries to 27 more. Ongoing shelling further knocked out power, impacting tens of thousands of residents. The cities of Dnipro, Kharkiv, and Mykolaiv also endured hits to their energy infrastructure, affecting hundreds of thousands. Additionally, a health facility and a school were reported damaged in these attacks. Casualties were also recorded in Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia. Ukrainian authorities informed OCHA that a warehouse containing humanitarian supplies was damaged in the Mykolaiv area.
In the Sumy region, about 40 individuals were evacuated to safer locations over the last three days, according to OCHA. Furthermore, in Donetsk, nearly 330 civilians, including approximately 50 children, were relocated. Since June, nearly 150,000 individuals have been evacuated from frontline zones, which includes over 16,500 children and more than 5,000 individuals with limited mobility. Humanitarian workers have successfully delivered aid to over 700,000 people near the front lines this year. However, significant funding shortfalls remain, leaving over one million individuals without access to safe drinking water and restricted access to protection and services addressing gender-based violence. This year’s appeal for $2.6 billion for humanitarian efforts in Ukraine is currently only half funded, with a total of nearly $1.4 billion raised.
