At the direction of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, the UAE has announced a significant commitment of $550 million in support of the UN Global Humanitarian Plan (GHP). The plan aims to raise $33 billion by 2026 to support an estimated 135 million people across 23 humanitarian operations around the world, including refugee and migrant programs. The primary objective of the assistance is to protect the lives of up to 87 million people in urgent need of support, through funding of $23 billion.
Tom Fletcher, UN Under-Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator, welcomed the news, saying: “Our global appeal aims to save lives where the impact is greatest and to turn plans into action. The UAE’s rapid and generous support for our 2026 plan sends a strong signal to those most in need.”
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said: “UNICEF greatly appreciates the UAE’s generous support, which will significantly help save and improve the lives of children affected by humanitarian crises. As needs grow faster than funding, this is a particularly important milestone that builds on UNICEF’s strategic partnership with the UAE.”
