Everyone wants to visit iconic tourist destinations worldwide, which is great, but we are increasingly hearing about cities and resorts that suffer greatly from overtourism.
But against this background, another trend is becoming more and more common – visiting cemetery parks. For most people, visiting cemeteries sounds eerie and not so pleasant, but for taphophiles (those who are interested in cemeteries) this is not the case.
For them, walking among the tombstones of deceased people gives a different perspective on the culture of a given country, and even on its history. There are even tourism experts who claim that cemetery tourism is gaining more and more popularity.
And this is especially true among people who want to resist popular tourism, writes Euronews Travel. Jono Namara, who is a taphophile, says that cemeteries are not an eerie place, but in fact, you can learn a lot from them.
He has turned his hobby into a popular Instagram account with over 34,000 followers. One of his favorite cemeteries is London, where people like Karl Marx and Sir Henry Tate are buried. Namara says that the cemetery in Paris and the one in Vienna are next on his list.
