Greece ends the era of the “eternal student”

Over 30,000 students have expressed interest in completing their education

Some 285,000 students who have exceeded both the minimum duration of their studies and the extension granted under Law 5224 of 2025 will be removed from the registers of Greek universities in December, announced Education Minister Sofia Zaharaki, quoted by the online edition of the Kathimerini newspaper.

In contrast, over 30,000 students have expressed interest in completing their education under the provisions of the law. Universities have started posting notices on their websites calling on eligible students to submit the necessary applications before the deadline.

According to data from the Rectors’ Conference, some “perpetual students” have been registered for decades – one since 1933 at the Athens University of Economics and Business, and another since 1938 at the University of Athens.

The University of Athens has the highest number of long-term students (83,970), while the former Technological Educational Institutes show the lowest participation in the latest exams.

The law stipulates that students admitted in 2016 or earlier will be automatically expelled two months after the publication of the results of the remedial exams in September 2025.

“The deadlines are strict and no extensions will be allowed,” the Hellenic Mediterranean University said in a statement.
