Cruise ship with over 200 people on board runs aground in the Danube River

A cruise ship with over 200 people on board ran aground on October 30th in the Danube River near the village of Garla Mare in Mehedince County, where the borders of Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia meet, reports Romanian “Diji 24” TV.

In this area, the level of the Danube River is very low, the media outlet points out.

The cruise ship had sailed from Turnu Magurele to Vienna with 180 passengers and 53 crew members.

In the Garla Mare area, the flow of the Danube on Thursday had decreased significantly – 2,600 cubic meters compared to 3,800 cubic meters, which is what it should be at this time of year, and the ship got stuck in a sandbank.

Authorities immediately took action, contacted the crew and passengers, and provided provisions for several days, as it was unclear how long the situation would last.

However, on Friday morning, the flow of the Danube increased and the ship was able to continue its voyage, “Diji 24” reported.
