India’s Supreme Court has reversed its order to confine all stray dogs in the capital Delhi to shelters after mass protests by animal rights activists, the BBC reports.
The three-judge bench has now said that dogs should be released after vaccination and sterilization, and only aggressive or rabid dogs should be kept in shelters.
The court has banned the feeding of stray dogs in public places and ordered that special areas be set up for the purpose.
On August 11, a two-judge bench of the court expressed concern about the growing “menace of dog bites leading to rabies” in Delhi and its suburbs.
The population of stray dogs in the Indian capital is estimated at one million and growing.
