High cigarette prices have caused a third of Russians to quit smoking

The high price of tobacco products has become one of the main reasons for a third of Russians to quit smoking, TASS reported.

Tiredness from smoking, health problems and a smoke-free environment are also noted among the main factors for getting rid of the harmful habit, according to a study by the insurance company Rosgosstrakh and the medical-technical holding Doctis.

“In general, respondents quit smoking because they got tired of smoking (32%). Among the main factors that influenced the decision to part with the harmful habit, Russians also noted the high price of cigarettes (31%).

The minimum price of a pack of cigarettes in Russia in 2025 is 135 rubles. A quarter of respondents (24%) quit smoking due to health problems.

Smoking is also a social habit, and the desire to smoke is often influenced by our environment: for example, 22% of respondents quit because no one around them smokes or it is no longer fashionable for them,” the study says.

It is noted that in order to break the harmful habit, Russians resort to various methods. For example, almost half of respondents (40%) managed to quit smoking through willpower. Only 7% were helped by switching to alternative nicotine-containing medications, 6% – a psychologist or support group, and another 7% had to turn to psychics. According to the study, most people successfully quit smoking either on the first try (39%) or after ten or more attempts (37%). More than half (54%) of the study participants can boast that they have not smoked for more than three years, 9% – from one to three years, and 11% – from one month to a year.
