As of November 2024 the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has founded the extent of violations of human rights in Sudan since December 2023.
Key Conflict Figures
The report shows that there has been a dramatic humanitarian impact:
• 11.1 million people have been made homeless
• 3,933 civilians killed, including 199 women, and 338 children
• 4,381 people injured
Major Human Rights Violations
The document highlights several systematic violations:
Sexual Violence
The OHCHR counted 60 instances of sexual violence that resulted in the exploitation of 83 females with most of the incidents being group rapes which were carried out by the Rapid Support Forces.
Child Recruitment
According to the report, children as young as 14 years have been legally allowed to join conflict parties.
“The conflict parties have not adhered to the international law and the civilians,” the report notes.
The High Commissioner calls on conflict parties to:
• Stop the armed fighting today
• Obedience to international humanitarian law
•Avoid all actions that may lead to the deaths of civilians
• Lift the barriers on receiving humanitarian aid
Geopolitical Context
The current conflict that has spread across several states is based on ethnic and tribal relations and is a threat to the region’s stability.
This report shows that there is a need for international intervention to reduce the suffering of Sudanese populations and to restore a framework of human rights protection.
