Dr Jørgen Skov Sørensen, general secretary of the Conference of European Churches (CEC) extends heartfelt condolences on the passing away of David Sassoli, president of the European Parliament.
On behalf of the European churches, Sørensen expressed deep appreciation for David Sassoli’s astounding efforts and work for a democratic and sustainable Europe.
David Sassoli, an Italian social democrat, died on 11 January in Italy at the age of 65.
“We are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of HE European Parliament President David Maria Sassoli and wish to express our deep and heartfelt condolences to his relatives and team,” said CEC general secretary in his letter to the cabinet of the late president.
“Europe has lost a true European, committed to build a stronger and social Europe, fighting for democratic and progressive values,” he added.
“We will remember and value President Sassoli’s engagement for dialogue with religious and philosophical organisations under Article 17 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU (TFEU). We keep the deceased, his relatives, friends and former colleagues in our thoughts and prayers.”
