Muberra Ozturk became the first woman wearing a headscarf to graduate from the Turkish Military Academy after receiving her diploma at a ceremony in Istanbul on Tuesday.

The Chief of Staff, General Yasar Guler, presented Lieutenant Ozturk with her diploma during a ceremony.

Lieutenant Ozturk successfully completed his training, finishing with the fifth highest success among his classmates.

In 2017, the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) lifted the ban on headscarves for female officers, non-commissioned officers and cadets.

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) initially tried to lift the headscarf ban in 2007, and the necessary constitutional amendments were made in 2010 to completely lift the ban on universities and public institutions in 2013. In 2015 the lifting of the ban was extended to the judiciary and the police in 2016.
