Sex crimes are reduced by 13% when there is a developed business with intimate services in the area
Strip clubs, escort services and other sex establishments are reducing levels of sexual violence in the area in which they are located. This conclusion was reached by experts from Princeton University, who investigated the link between the emergence of strip clubs in the area and the level of sexual crimes, including rape.
The study, published in the Oxford Economic Journal, found that sex crimes decreased by 13% when there was a developed sex business in the area.
The report’s authors, economists Maria Mikaela Svyatshi and Ricardo Siachi, compared sexual crime databases to the dates and opening points of strip clubs and other places of intimate entertainment.
They found that a week after the opening of a strip club, the local police department received 13% fewer reports of sex crimes.
According to the authors of the study, it can be concluded that the level of sexual crimes is declining due to the fact that potential rapists visit entertainment establishments with intimate services, instead of attacking women on the streets.
Researchers rely on archival data for the state of New York from January 1, 2004 to June 30, 2012. During that time, the number of adult facilities there has grown from 76 to 280.
