Portuguese General Elections – First polls point to a Socialist victory
All the main polls point to a solid victory of PS, Partido Socialista (Socialist Party), over PSD. More voter turnout compared to the last elections.
All the major polls point to the reelection of António Costa as PM, but a parliamentary majority, although probable, is near impossible.
The result is a major upset for PSD, Partido Social-Democrata (Social-Democrat Party). The party expected a more balanced result or even a slight victory over the socialists.
The nationalist/populist party CHEGA! (ENOUGH!) will almost certainly be the 3rd political force in the Portuguese Parliament.
The other two major left-wing parties Bloco de Esquerda (Left Bloc) and Partido Comunista Português (Portuguese Communist Party) will also have less parliamentary representation. Another party that has an anticipated loss of votes and parliamentary seats is PAN (People Animals Nature).
Other parties like Iniciativa Liberal (Liberal Initiative), Livre (Free) and the People’s Party (CDS-PP) may have results within or even above the expectations.
