The grandson of the first president of the Fifth French Republic Charles de Gaulle – Pierre de Gaulle – called Vladimir Putin the great president of his country, as reported by RIA Novosti from Paris, December 27.
Russian Ambassador to France Alexei Meshkov on Monday conveyed congratulations from Russian President Vladimir Putin to Charles de Gaulle’s son Philippe, who will celebrate his 100th anniversary on 28 December. Congratulations and gifts were presented to Pierre de Gaulle, who arrived at the residence of the Russian ambassador with his wife.
“I am very touched by the attention of President Putin, the attention of the Ambassador. For me, this is an occasion to emphasize the strong friendship between France and Russia, which was born not only thanks to the common victory over the fascist invaders. This friendship existed in the souls, in the mentality of the French for a long time,” – the grandson of General Charles de Gaulle told reporters.
He expressed his commitment to the idea of Europe from the Atlantic to the Urals, which the first president of the Fifth French Republic spoke about.
“I would like us to return to the fundamental values that, unfortunately, we have lost in Europe and also in France. These are the values of family, tradition and dignity,” he said.
“I also think that President Putin is a great leader, a great president for his country,” Pierre de Gaulle said.
He added that it is impossible to understand some countries without understanding their history, their culture, without understanding their mentality and language.
