The representatives of the highest State institutions have celebrated Constitution Day with an institutional act in the Congress of Deputies, presided over by Meritxell Batet

The Spain‘s Cortes Generales (the Chambers) celebrated Constitution Day this midday with an institutional act, presided over by Meritxell Batet, President of the Congress of Deputies (Parliament), accompanied by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the Presidents of the Constitutional Court, Pedro José González-Trevijano, and of the General Council of the Judiciary, Carlos Lesmes. The members of the Congress and Senate Committees, spokespersons of the parliamentary groups of both Chambers and ministers and members of the Government took their places on the steps.

The main ceremony to commemorate the anniversary of the Constitution, approved by referendum by the citizens 43 years ago today, took place in the Carrera de San Jerónimo, in order to maintain the preventive health measures, and brought together representatives of the highest State institutions, social agents and civil society.

The President of the Congress, Meritxell Batet, gave a speech in which she stressed that, in recent years, the celebration of our Constitution “has allowed us to highlight its success and that of those who made it possible, as a foundation for coexistence, cohesion and progress in our society; as proof that we are building every day what its first article wanted for our homeland, a social and democratic State governed by the rule of law. All these aspects are still alive and well on this new anniversary of the referendum in which the citizens approved the constitutional text forty-three years ago“.

Batet also wanted to remember those who have died as a result of the pandemic and their families, and to express her gratitude to the health workers, social workers and public servants. In this regard, she acknowledged that “celebrating the Constitution is, ultimately, celebrating the awareness of community and the commitment of all to mutual aid and joint progress in solidarity with our fellow citizens, so that today, Constitution Day, is above all a day of recognition of their work and their contribution to the common good“.

She also wished to place special emphasis on what the supreme law means for Spanish politics, and above all for politicians, the democratic representatives: “The Constitution is the expression of a fundamental consensus, it is a reference of values and principles in which we feel recognised, it is a law that demands respect and compliance in our actions and decisions, and it is a programme for the future whose effectiveness we must pursue in the development of the policies that we promote“.

The institutional act was attended by members of the Congress and Senate Committees and spokespersons of the parliamentary groups of both Chambers, as well as ministers and high authorities from other institutions, such as the Ombudsman, the Court of Auditors, the State Attorney General’s Office and the Council of State, the presidents of the autonomous communities and cities and the mayor of Madrid; the president of the majority opposition party, deputies and senators, former presidents of the Government and of the Chambers, and constitutional rapporteurs.
