Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew underwent a stent placement procedure in New York yesterday for the second time, AFP reported.
He was admitted to a Manhattan hospital for research in the afternoon after feeling unwell during his visit to the United States.
A statement from the Greek Orthodox Church said the procedure was performed at Mount Sinai Hospital. The Ecumenical Patriarch will be discharged today after spending the night in the hospital. It is also stated that stent placement is a common procedure that aims to restore blood flow to the heart in clogged arteries. Prior to that, the Ecumenical Patriarch observed the program of his visit and met with the newly elected mayor of New York Eric Adams.
This is Bartholomew’s 81-year-old hospital’s second visit since arriving in the United States. On October 24, he spent one night in a hospital in Washington.
On November 2, His All Holiness Bartholomew attended the opening of the Orthodox Church “St. Nicholas ”on Height Zero in New York, which was destroyed during the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. The final opening of the temple for worship will be in the next 2022. The event coincided with the anniversary of the enthronement of the Ecumenical Patriarch, which is the reason for his visit to the largest diocese of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. “I hope that only good news will come to us from New York, in Fener, which will make us rejoice in the Lord, be proud and encourage us to continue our responsible work in the Cathedral of Constantinople,” he said.
The patriarch’s speech received a strong church response during his reception at the Archdiocese of New York a few days ago, at a meeting with prominent members of the local Greek church community. He commented on the actions of the Moscow Patriarchate over the past two years for recognizing the Church’s autocephaly in Ukraine, using free and undiplomatic language.
