The Hungarian MEP, József Szájer, has said he is resigning from politics “after a long period of reflection”.

The EU bubble is making all kinds of news. So much so that Belgian police last Friday interrupted an orgy in the centre of Brussels involving 25 men, including an MEP and several diplomats. The MEP caught at the event was József Szájer, a member of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party, who resigned both his seat and his political activity on Tuesday. He himself confirmed this in a statement, adding that he had not taken drugs.
József Szájer has been an MEP since 2004 and is one of the staunchest supporters of Orbán’s policies – he is a founder of the party – which have often been described as authoritarian. In fact, the Hungarian government has recently proposed a reform of the Constitution to prohibit the possibility of legally modifying the gender assigned at birth. LGTBI associations have already denounced a new attack on the group.
Szájer tried to flee and then told the officers that he had parliamentary immunity, according to several media reports. His identity had initially not been revealed, but his sudden resignation has set off alarm bells. Fidesz is a party that has been described as homophobic in recent times.
Hungary’s government is in the hot seat over Orbán’s veto of the recovery fund. The prime minister, like his Polish counterpart, rejects linking post-covid aid to compliance with the rule of law. Both Hungary and Poland have long been singled out, and have been threatened with suspension of their vote in the European Council (article 7 of the Treaties). In addition, Fidesz is suspended in the EPP.
