A powerful explosion erupted in the early hours of today in northern Tehran after an “unidentified object” exploded in a park without injuring anyone, state television reported, quoted by Reuters.

“An unidentified object exploded. There was no damage or injuries,” a television reporter said.

Tehran Deputy Governor Hamid Reza Gudarzi, who is in charge of security issues, visited the site.

“There was only one explosion inside Melat Park (People),” he told the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

Asked to comment on whether the case involved an attack, Gudarzi said: “We are investigating the size and causes of the accident and will provide information once we are sure.”

Attacks are rare in Iran, but a number of military and nuclear sites have been attacked in recent years.

Tehran has blamed Israel for several attacks on sites and scientists linked to Iran’s nuclear program. Israel has neither denied nor confirmed these allegations.
