The Vatican will create a special commission to deal with the development and impact of artificial intelligence, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
Pope Leo XIV has approved the creation of an “Interdepartmental Commission on Artificial Intelligence”, whose task will be to analyze “the potential effects on human beings and on humanity as a whole” of the development of artificial intelligence technologies.
The commission will include representatives of various Vatican institutions, the Holy See announced.
The topic of artificial intelligence is among the main accents in Pope Leo XIV’s public appearances. At the beginning of his pontificate in May last year, he raised the issue of the need for a balanced interaction between technology and man, and also warned of the potential risks of the development of artificial intelligence.
The topic is expected to find a place in the Pope’s first major encyclical. According to Vatican News, the document could be published by the end of the month. According to media reports, the working title of the encyclical is “Magnifica humanitas” (“Magnificent Humanity”).
According to the Vatican, the new commission will be tasked with facilitating cooperation and exchange of information between the various institutions on issues related to artificial intelligence, including regarding policies for its use in the Holy See.
The coordination of the commission’s work in the first year will be undertaken by one of the Vatican institutions.
