New rules for shops in Istanbul

In Istanbul, authorities are introducing new measures against aggressive solicitation by shops, a practice that has been repeatedly complained about by visitors. Under a decree by Governor Davut Gul, merchants are required to install audio and video recording cameras in front of and around their stores. They are prohibited from chasing or forcing passersby into their premises, offering “samples” of products outside the store, or making physical contact with people on the streets.

Employees can only greet passersby with a “welcome” and invite them in, staying no more than 50 cm from the window. Violations will be punished with fines and temporary closure of the establishment – from three to ten days depending on the number of violations. Control will be strengthened through police checks, drones and body cameras.

The measures are being introduced to ensure the safety and comfort of the millions of local and foreign tourists visiting the city. Istanbul is particularly popular with tourists being among the regular visitors to the historical and cultural landmarks of the metropolis.

Between January and August alone, Istanbul welcomed 12.4 million foreign tourists, which is nearly 35% of all international tourist arrivals to Turkey for that period.
