Denmark allows use of artificial intelligence in matriculation exams

Some Danish high school students will be able to use artificial intelligence from 2026 in the oral English exam in the matriculation exams, the Ministry of Education announced.

During the exam, students will be able to use AI in the preparatory phase of the oral exam: after the topic is downloaded, each student will have one hour to prepare, during which “all tools are allowed to be used, including generative AI”. Until now, the use of the technology was not possible.

We are looking for the right balance between the analog and digital worlds, said the country’s education minister.

Although AI is a technology allowed for use during the exam, the student will also have to make an oral presentation to the examiner, writes AFP.

Denmark, which has allowed controlled use of the internet during exams since 2008, seeks to promote, through a strict framework, digital development in education.

“We are starting these experiments to find the right balance. When students develop in both the analog and digital worlds, we prepare them in the best possible way for the reality after school,” said Minister Mathias Tesfaye.

This experiment is open to high schools that voluntarily enroll, and only applies to the general education program.
