On 4 July 2025, European Council President António Costa was in Chișinău for the first EU-Moldova summit. In his opening remarks at the start of the plenary session, he emphasised Moldova’s steady progress on its EU path, highlighting the tangible benefits of EU integration for Moldovan citizens and reaffirming the EU’s full support for Moldova’s resilience and security.

“First of all, it is a great pleasure for us, and for me personally, to be back here in Chișinău. I was last here in March, on the day that marked three years since Moldova applied for the membership of the European Union. Allow me to commend you for Moldova’s steady progress on its path towards European Union membership, which was recognised by all European Union member states last week in the European Council.

Moldova’s European Union path is delivering real results for the people, and this will continue. On infrastructure, jobs, opportunities for businesses, higher living standards, increasing competitiveness of your economy, and above all greater access of the world’s largest single market – this is what European Union integration means.

We are here to continue to work with you and to give you confidence in this European path that is decisive not only for your security, but also for our security and for our common prosperity.”
