President Trump announced on social media Wednesday evening that Hamas had agreed to release all hostages held inside Gaza “very soon,” while Israel agreed to a gradual withdrawal of its ground forces toward “an agreed line.”
Hamas reportedly confirmed the deal, calling on the international community to ensure Israel abides by its terms.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it was a “great day for Israel,” adding that the government would meet on Thursday to approve the first phase – including an immediate ceasefire, according to media reports.
“I welcome the announcement of an agreement to secure a ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza, based on the proposal put forward by President Donald J. Trump,” the UN chief said. Antonio Guterres in a statement.
Praise to the peacemakers
“I welcome the diplomatic efforts of The United States, Qatar, Egypt and Turkey negotiated this desperately needed breakthrough..”
The Secretary-General urged “all those concerned to fully respect the terms of the agreement”, including the release of hostages held for more than two years in Gaza “with dignity”.
Mr. Guterres insisted on the need for a permanent ceasefire. The United Nations is responsible, as part of the American plan, with the Red Crescent, for supervising the entry and distribution of humanitarian aid.
“The fighting must stop once and for all,” the UN chief continued. “The immediate and unhindered entry of humanitarian supplies and essential commercial materials into Gaza must be guaranteed.. The suffering must end.
He said the organization would fully support the implementation of the agreement in stages, as well as the advancement of recovery and reconstruction efforts in the devastated Gaza Strip.
Seize the day
“I urge all stakeholders to seize this momentous opportunity to establish a credible policy path forward. towards the end of the occupation, the recognition of the right to self-determination of the Palestinian people and the achievement of a two-State solution allowing Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace and security,” the Secretary-General said.
“The stakes have never been higher.”
