Average CO2 emissions from new cars and new vans slightly increased in 2024 | Press releases

Average CO₂ emissions from new vans increased more significantly in 2024. The average emissions from both new cars and new vans were below the 2024 fleet-wide targets, but still significantly above the new targets that apply from 2025. An increase in emissions in the last calendar year before stricter targets start applying was also observed in 2019. 

The data published today are based on information provided by European countries, including details on all newly registered cars and vans. 

The provisional data show that 10.7 million new cars were registered in the EU, Norway and Iceland in 2024, which is the same as in 2023. Approximately 22% of these new car registrations were electric — either fully or plug-in hybrid. The share of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) declined by about 1 percentage point compared to 2023.  

This is the main cause of the observed increase in average emissions to 185.4 grams CO2/km, up by 4.5 g CO2/km, compared to 2023. The fleet share of electric cars was highest in Norway (92%), Sweden (62%) and Denmark (56%). 

In 2024, 1.3 million new vans were registered in the EU, Norway and Iceland, which is 9% more than in 2023. The fleet share of electric vans — nearly all of them fully electric — decreased from 8.3% in 2023 to 6.4% in 2024. This is the main cause of the observed increase in average emissions to 185.4 grams CO₂/km, up by 4.5 g CO₂/km, compared to 2023. More than half of the fully electric vans were registered in three countries: France, Germany and Netherlands; while the highest fleet share of electric vans was found in Norway (30%), Sweden (21%) and Denmark (18%).
