Kananaskis, Alberta | 13 June 2025 — António Costa, President of the European Council, will travel to Kananaskis, Alberta, to represent the European Union at the G7 Summit taking place from 15 to 17 June 2025. Hosted by Canada under its rotating G7 presidency, the summit marks a significant gathering of world leaders at a time of mounting geopolitical uncertainty and global economic strain.
Alongside Costa, the European Union will also be represented by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Together, they will join the heads of state and government from the G7 nations — Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States — as well as leaders from invited countries, to chart a course through some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
This year’s summit carries special symbolic weight as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the G7’s founding. Reflecting on this milestone, Costa stressed the urgency of collective action:
“In a time of profound challenges and as we celebrate 50 years since the foundation of the G7, unity among the G7 leaders is not just desirable – it is essential. Only by standing together can we protect our citizens, defend our values and deliver real solutions to a world in urgent need of stability and direction.”
Over the course of seven high-level sessions, leaders will tackle a wide-ranging agenda that includes international peace and security, economic resilience, energy independence, and the global rules-based order. The summit will reaffirm the G7’s united stance in support of Ukraine and its sovereignty, while also addressing emerging threats such as cyberattacks, foreign interference, and the intensifying effects of climate-related disasters.
Geopolitical flashpoints in the Middle East and Indo-Pacific are also expected to dominate discussions, as G7 members assess their collective responses to a rapidly evolving global landscape.
In the run-up to the summit, President Costa contributed an article to the Global Governance Project’s special G7 issue, outlining the EU’s priorities and the importance of multilateral cooperation in addressing shared global challenges.
With the stakes higher than ever, the Kananaskis summit will be a test of the G7’s resolve — and a key moment for the EU to reinforce its leadership role on the world stage.
