Organizers of the Tokyo Olympics have officially announced that fans are banned from attending the Games after the Japanese prime minister declared a state of emergency in the Japanese capital.
The spectator ban is the latest blow to the Olympics, postponed by a year due to the pandemic, including a huge budget overrun.
Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said the fourth state of emergency in Tokyo would begin on Monday – 11 days before the opening of the Games – and would end on August 22, two days before the start of the Paralympic Games.
Tokyo reported 920 new cases of infection on Wednesday. That compares to 714 last Wednesday and is the highest total since 1,010 on May 13. 896 new cases were announced on Thursday.
The audience for the game was quite discussed, and it was first stated that there would be only local people without foreigners. The latest information was that there will be up to 5,000 spectators, but the new environment has completely changed that and there will be no audience.
The Olympic Games start on July 23 and apart from being the first games to be postponed by one year, they will now be the first to be without an audience.
